The NYT has a fun little piece about how Samuel Alito, hero of the underdog, is concerned that in the wake of SCOTUS’ Obergefell v. Hodges decision, which recognized that, y’know, male and female humans should be allowed to marry other consenting male and female humans that they love, people have gotten the wrong idea: that’s it’s morally and socially okay for people of the same gender to marry each other and that those people who consider such unions an abomination might be unfairly considered bigots. Heavens! Won’t somebody think of the religious fundamentalists and their God-given right to discriminate?! While it may be fun to picture old Sam passed out on the fainting couch, fanning himself furiously, it’s an ominous sign given that Alito and Clarence Thomas have been signaling for years that they’d like to revisit that case and maybe… I don’t know… overturn it? Obergefell was a 5-4 decision and, of those five justices, only Sotomayor and Kagan are still on the bench. Luckily, the rest have been replaced by… checks notes… Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Coney Barrett. Fuck.
