NBC news reports that North Carolina lieutenant governor and Holocaust denier Mark Robinson has won today’s Republican primary in that state and will take on the Democratic attorney general Josh Stein in the race to replace governor Roy Cooper in November. Robinson, who described LGBQ+ people as “filth,” suggested that transgender women should be arrested if they use a woman’s bathroom, ridiculed school shooting survivors as “spoiled little bastards,” and “media prosti-tots” and described public school teachers “wicked people,” clearly captured the imagination of North Carolina’s Republican electorate, handily defeating his competitors, Dale Folwell and Bill Graham. “As an avowed racist, sexist, antisemitic, hateful and bitter person, his message of intolerance and batshit conspiracy mongering really spoke to me,” said retired Raleigh mill worker Richard Egber, “North Carolina needs this kind of unhinged leadership in the Governor’s mansion.”
With Republicans currently in the majority in the state House and Senate, winning the Governor’s office would give control of the entire North Carolina state government to the GOP. But the heavily Republican First in Flight state has a long record of split ticket voting and putting Democrats in the Governor’s office. Democrats are betting that Robinson’s insanity will rally Democratic voters to the polls in November. And if the last eight years have taught us anything, it’s that the American people always make good decisions.
