Supremes Keep Trump Hangin’ On

In case you missed it, the Washington Post reports that the Supreme Court once again – this time unanimously – shielded Trump from any consequences of his insurrectionist proclivities. Overturning a 4-3 decision by the Colorado Supreme Court in December that held that the 14th Amendment, barring insurrectionists from holding office, disqualified Trump from appearing the state ballot, the Supreme Court disagreed, stating that the Constitution does not permit a single state to unilaterally disqualify a federal candidate from office. While the decision was a per curiam 9-0, the three liberal justices on the bench were not happy with the breadth of the decision. Writing in a concurrence, they argued that the majority opinion “shuts the door on other potential means of federal enforcement,” i.e. the conservative justices are making it damn near impossible to bar anyone, even those who want to hang their own Vice President, to be disqualified from office.

The conservative justices, however, had their own legal perspective. Writing for the majority, Justice Clarence Thomas stated, “I’m old and tired. Running the far right grift while pretending to be a sober, dispassionate man of reason is exhausting. All I want to do is retire in the house Harlan Crowe bought me. But if there’s anything worse than helping get an insane, insurrectionist, wannabe authoritarian elected, it’s letting a Democrat nominate my successor. So, fuck it, all bets are off.”

The courts aren’t gonna save us, folks. Get involved and vote!
